Matthew Boudreau, a graduate student in the research group of chemistry Prof. Paul Hergenrother, received the 2023 Scarborough Award for Graduate/PostGraduate Excellence in Medicinal Chemistry from the American Chemical Society's Division of Medicinal Chemistry.
Each year, the Scarborough Award recognizes two graduate students and/or postdoctoral researchers who have had primary, leading roles in the significant scientific discoveries that enhance the field of medicinal chemistry. The award is in memory of Robert M. Scarborough, an accomplished medicinal chemist and inventor of drugs such as Natrecor® and Integrilin®, and is sponsored by Portola Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a cardiovascular company founded by Dr. Scarborough.
The doctoral research of Boudreau, who will graduate with his PhD on May 14, 2023, centered around a novel therapeutic, ERSO, that successfully eradicates hormone-positive (ER+) breast cancer in multiple preclinical mouse models.

The awardees present their research at the Fall national meeting of the American Chemical Society as a part of the Division of Medicinal Chemistry program, where they will receive a commemorative plaque, up to $1,500 in travel expenses, and a $4,000 honorarium.
Candidates must have demonstrated a key role in and contribution to a research project with direct medicinal chemistry applications and relevance. Nominees are expected to have demonstrated creativity and insight in medicinal chemistry and/or biology and possess pragmatic, empirical problem-solving skills.
