Joel M. Harris is currently Distinguished Professor of Chemistry at the University of Utah. He received a BS degree from Duke University in 1972 and his PhD from Purdue University in 1976. Harris's research activities have focused on the application of lasers to analytical chemistry and spectroscopy of interfaces. He and his group have developed new measurement concepts in photothermal spectroscopy, trace-level chemical detection, single-molecule counting, and multi-dimensional analysis of time-resolved fluorescence and Raman spectroscopic data. They have pioneered surface-selective spectroscopies for investigating interfacial molecular transport, adsorption, and binding in chemical separations and analysis. Through these efforts, Harris has published more than 180 research articles, chapters, and patents. He has delivered over 230 invited lectures at scientific meetings, universities, and industrial research settings. Harris is a past recipient of an Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship, the Coblentz Memorial Prize inMolecular Spectroscopy, the University of Utah Distinguished Research Award, the ACS Division of Analytical Chemistry Award in Chemical Instrumentation, the Society for Applied Spectroscopy (New York Section) Gold Medal Award, and the Pittsburgh Analytical Chemistry Award. For over 15 years, Harris has served as an American Chemical Society National Tour Speaker. He is currently Editor-in-Chief of Applied Spectroscopy.
